The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal James A. Gorman (ASN: 50036), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne-a-Arnes, France, 3 October 1918. When he saw a soldier lying wounded about 200 yards in front of his trench, Corporal Gorman, without thought of personal danger, went out and brought him to safety, under terrific machine-gun fire from both sides and from the front.
