The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Montgomery Goodall, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 321st Machine-Gun Battalion, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Belair Farm, near Pont-a-Mousson, France, 12 September 1918. When our forces were attacked on the right flank at Belair Farm, Lieutenant Goodall defended this flank alone with his pistol, preventing the enemy from coming up the trenches until the infantry could form too resist the attack. Throughout a very trying and critical time this officer displayed utter disregard of personal danger, and by his remarkable personal bravery inspired confidence among his own men and cooperating troops.
