The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Thomas R. Gibson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Soissons, France, 21 July 1918. First Lieutenant Gibson displayed rare gallantry and leadership when, all the other officers of his company having been killed or wounded, he led his men through a zone of intense bombardment, and, although badly wounded himself, he attained his objective with only five men and two machine-guns, refusing to be evacuated until his guns were effectively in action.
