The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Herbert D. Gibson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne-a-Arnes, France, 3 October 1918. During the attack, when his company was debouching from a wood, Lieutenant Gibson’s men were suddenly exposed to direct fire of a 150-millimeter gun some 200 meters to the front.
