The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Herman D. Gentry (ASN: 96166), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 167th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Pexonne, France, 5 March 1918. Private Gentry showed courageous devotion to duty by remaining at his post under heavy shell fire. He died 11 March 1918, of wounds that were received in action while fighting gallantly.
