The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private John E. Garthright (ASN: 1707274), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Forest of Argonne, France, September 28 – 29, 1918. Private Garthright distinguished himself time after time carrying in wounded under heavy shell fire until he was finally killed while engaged in this self-sacrificing work.
