The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant George W. Gardner (ASN: 2176371), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 353d Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in Bois-de-Barricourt, France, 2 November 1918. Sergeant Gardner led his platoon through shell and machine-gun fire in an attack on strong enemy positions, capturing two machine-guns and assisting in the destruction of several others that were holding up our advance.
