The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private William Gander (ASN: 2383354), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 60th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 14 October 1918. Voluntarily advancing ahead of his company, Private Gander captured an enemy machine-gun with three prisoners. The next morning, with another soldier, he again went forth and caused the surrender of several guns and five prisoners. His bravery in both instances greatly facilitated the advance of his company, who were meeting with resistance from the nests, which Private Gander wiped out.
