The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Carroll M. Gale, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Bois-de-Chaume, France, 10 October 1918. Although painfully wounded while his company was advancing to the final objective, Captain Gale courageously continued to lead the company and later directed the front-line operations of his battalion until the line was organized. Captain Gale was continuously under heavy shell and machine-gun fire while moving back and forth along the line, and the example of his coolness and bravery was an inspiration to his men.
