The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Thomas F. Furness, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 7th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fosse, France, November 1 – 5, 1918. Performing his duties as liaison officer in a most effective manner, Lieutenant Furness also took command of infantry platoons, after the officers had become casualties, and led them brilliantly. On one occasion he reorganized a platoon after the leader had been killed and attacked a strong machine-gun position, capturing four guns and 15 prisoners.
