The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal John Philip Fray (ASN: 65276), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at St. Hilaire, France, 18 September 1918. While under heavy enemy machine-gun fire, Corporal Fray charged a machine gun single-handed, putting it out of action and dispersing its crew. Later, as the raiding party withdrew, he assisted in carrying back the wounded.
