The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Ernest Fosnes (ASN: 567092), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 59th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Aisne-Marne offensive, France, 19 July and 8 August 1918. On July 19 Corporal Fosnes exposed himself to intense machine-gun and artillery fire to assist in the reorganization of his company, which had become temporarily disorganized, due to heavy losses. On 8 August when his platoon had become separated from the company during the attack, he exposed himself to direct machine-gun fire in order to encourage the members of his platoon in their task. He was mortally wounded a short time afterwards.
