The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Matthew W. Forsyth, Jr. (ASN: 129182), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery E, 12th Field Artillery, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Thiaucourt, France, 12 September 1918. When his gun position was subjected to a heavy enfilading fire, Private Forsyth continued in the service of his piece, regardless of his personal safety, and was killed while in the performance of his duty.
