The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Pietro E. Formica (ASN: 567932), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 59th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ville Savoye, France, 8 August 1918. After several other soldiers had been killed in attempting to carry a message across an open field, under intense enemy fire, Private Formica volunteered for this perilous mission and successfully accomplished it. He continued to display marked courage in carrying messages under fire, until he was wounded next day.
