The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Thomas E. Fitzsimmons (ASN: 88483), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Landres-et-St. Georges, France, 15 October 1918. Running forward to a slope just above the enemy’s wire, Sergeant Fitzsimmons, although exposing himself to direct fire of all kinds, was able to conduct such an effective fire with his trench mortars, that a threatened enemy counterattack was broken up.
