The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Newell R. Fiske, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fossoy, France, 15 July 1918. Captain Fiske fearlessly led his troops in a counterattack through intense artillery fire, inspiring his men by his gallant conduct. He lost his life while in the performance of this act.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) Newell R. Fiske, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, Captain Fiske exhibited the highest type of valor and heroism in leading troops in a counter attack near Fossoy, through intense enemy artillery bombardment, inspiring the men by his coolness and presence. He lost his life in the performance of his duty, saying as he was hit: “I am bumped off now boys. Go and get them.” [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
