By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Walter J. Fillyaw (Fillyan) (ASN: 2340137), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Fillyaw distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Cunel, France, 5 October 1918. Although wounded, Private Fillyaw continued to give first aid until wounded a second time. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 8 (March 1, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Walter J. Fillyaw (ASN: 2340137), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 4th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 5 October 1918. Having been wounded and ordered to the rear, Private Fillyaw nevertheless continued to administer first-aid treatment to other wounded men under constant shell fire, until he was wounded a second time, when he was evacuated, despite his protests.
