The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Neil D. Fenton (ASN: 2062), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 26th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 9 October 1918. Corporal Fenton volunteered and went forward in the face of direct concentrated machine-gun fire to the rescue of a wounded man. He was killed while attempting this rescue.
