The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John R. Feegal, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vaux, France, 20 July 1918. When his company was held up by a machine gun Lieutenant Feegal went ahead under fire alone and killed the machine-gun operator with his pistol, thereby enabling his company to continue the advance.
