The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Major (Infantry) George Wills Farwell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 361st Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Gesnes, France, September 28 – 29, 1918. He displayed exceptional personal bravery in leading his command to the capture of enemy positions near Gesnes, France, September 28 – 29, 1918. In each of these actions his troops were subjected to heavy artillery bombardment and machine-gun fire, but due to his coolness and the inspiration of his personal leadership and bravery, his battalion in each instance captured and held the positions attacked.
