The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ludwig Lionel Everson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 129th Machine-Gun Battalion, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Argonne Forest, France, 26 September 1918. Meeting with stubborn resistance from the enemy, First Lieutenant Everson reorganized scattered personnel from other units, attached them to his platoon and continued to advance. When mortally wounded, he refused all assistance, ordering his detachment forward.
