The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Charles H. Evans (ASN: 574149), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 39th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near the Bois-de-Brieulles, France, 26 September 1918. When his company was held up by heavy enemy machine-gun fire, Private Evans and two other soldiers advanced in the face of intense fire and captured the enemy machine-gun nest, from which the fire had been coming, killing two of the enemy and capturing three prisoners with their machine gun.
