By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Joseph C. Engle (ASN: 1315222), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Engle distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near St. Souplet, France, 19 October 1918, in assuming command of his platoon and brilliantly leading it forward.

Engle (ASN: 1315222), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. Although himself wounded, Sergeant Engle continued to lead the advance of his platoon and, when it was held up by fire from an enemy machine-gun nest, he advanced against it alone, bombed it, and thus allowed a resumption of the advance.
