Sergeant Engle distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near St. Souplet, France, 19 October 1918, in assuming command of his platoon and brilliantly leading it forward.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Joseph C. Engle (ASN: 1315222), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. Although himself wounded, Sergeant Engle continued to lead the advance of his platoon and, when it was held up by fire from an enemy machine-gun nest, he advanced against it alone, bombed it, and thus allowed a resumption of the advance.
