No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Leo Englander (ASN: 1708449), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Englander distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Ville Savoye, France, 23 August 1918, in attempting to rescue a wounded comrade.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Leo Englander (ASN: 1708449), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the Vesle River, near Ville-Savoye, France, 23 August 1918. Private Englander volunteered to go out into no man’s land to bring in a comrade from his platoon who had been seriously wounded and unable to move. Private Englander reached the man and was about to carry him to safety when he was killed by enemy machine-gun fire. His heroism was an inspiration to the members of his company.
