The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Charles G. Elliott (ASN: 1099102), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 56th Infantry Regiment, 7th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Preny, France, 5 November 1918. While leading a patrol in front of his company sector on 5 November 1918, Sergeant Elliott and another member of his patrol were wounded, when heavy machine-gun fire was encountered. However, he retained command of the patrol, took care of the wounded man, and reported to his company commander the results of the patrol before he would be evacuated.
