The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Infantry) Charles B. Elliott, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chateau-Thierry, France, June 6 – 7, 1918. Leading his command in combat on June 6 – 7, Major Elliott reformed his badly shattered units in the face of unusual and annihilating fire and directed the placing of his guns throughout a severe gas attack, which severely poisoned him. While leading two companies of his battalion forward in the attack, 19 July he was wounded by artillery fire.
