The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Henry Elwood Dye (ASN: 2181655), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 126th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Juvigny, France, 29 August 1918. After an advance through heavy machine-gun fire, from which his organization had suffered many casualties and he himself had been twice wounded, Corporal Dye had taken refuge in a shell hole, when he heard the cries of a wounded comrade, who was lying in an exposed position. Disregarding the intense machine-gun fire, Corporal Dye crossed an open space, dressed the wounds of his comrade and carried him to shelter.
