The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) Mark Matthew Duffy, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 124th Field Artillery (Attached), 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Romagne, France, 1 November 1918. First Lieutenant Duffy displayed exceptional bravery in caring for the wounded and directing their evacuation under heavy shell fire. During the action he went under concentrated fire and rescued several wounded men.
