The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Francis A. Duffy (ASN: 2414057), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 310th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 78th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Thiaucourt and Grand Pre, France, 21 September and 16 October 1918. On 21 September at Thiaucourt, France, Private Duffy remained in the front line trenches under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, caring for the wounded, and displaying utter disregard for personal danger while administering first-aid treatment to 40 men. During the advance of his company from St. Juvin to Grand Pre, Private Duffy followed immediately behind the first wave, under heavy machine-gun and shell fire, caring for the wounded as they fell.
