The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Irvin H. Dresbach (ASN: 94363), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 166th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Sommerance, France, 14 October 1918. Taking command of the platoon and also the advance patrol, when both their leaders had become casualties, and despite the fact that he was so severely gassed than he could hardly speak, Sergeant Dresbach pushed vigorously forward, compelling the enemy to run in confusion and causing them to surrender to a nearby division.
