The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant William Doyle (ASN: 1235549), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 100th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Apremont, France, 27 September 1918. When the advance of his company was halted by machine-gun fire from an enemy nest, Sergeant Doyle, utterly disregarding his own personal danger, volunteered to locate definitely, and silence, if possible, the destructive fire. With great skill and bravery he advanced about 500 yards beyond our lines and assisted in silencing the machine guns and capturing several prisoners. The courageous action of Sergeant Doyle greatly inspired his comrades and enabled his company to make a further advance.
