Doyle (ASN: 49946), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne-a-Arnes, France, 4 October 1918. Corporal Doyle, in charge of the runners, repeatedly carried important messages himself from company to battalion headquarters. He volunteered to deliver a message to an outpost through a hail of machine-gun bullets, and while performing this mission was wounded.
