The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) John F. Doudna, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 362d Infantry Regiment (Attached), 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Gesnes, France, 25 September 1918. First Lieutenant Doudna was under constant shell fire with his battalion for 17 days, and though he had been painfully wounded by a machine-gun bullet, he remained at his post, rendering first aid to the wounded night and day, performing the duties of two other medical officers who had been incapacitated in addition to his own. Lieutenant Doudna’s utter disregard for personal danger and complete devotion to duty made possible the rapid evacuation of the wounded, thus materially keeping up the morale of the combat troops and alleviating the suffering of the wounded.
