    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal James Dooley (ASN: 550012), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal James Dooley and Private Stanley Pabrinskis when they saw that their Lieutenant who had crossed the Vesle on a patrol had fallen, went immediately to him through heavy machine gun fire and carried him to the First Aid Station. These men exhibited remarkable courage and coolness during the barrage of 15 July and on the Vesle as litter bearers. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

Corporal Dooley distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Connigis, France, 15 July 1918, and on the Vesle River, 27 July 1918, while assisting wounded to shelter under fire.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal James Dooley (ASN: 550012), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the Vesle River, France, 7 August 1918. While acting as litter bearer, Corporal Dooley displayed exceptional bravery and courage in crossing in broad daylight the river on a narrow footbridge within 100 yards of the enemy machine guns, and where several men had been killed by enemy fire. He succeeded in crossing, and carried back an officer who had been mortally wounded on the north bank of the river.
