    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Paul J. Donovan (ASN: 1387516), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Chipilly Ridge, France, 9 August 1918. Private Donovan, while exposed to machine-gun and artillery fire, went forward and killed an enemy sniper. Later, while moving forward to the attack, he entered single-handed a dugout and captured five of the enemy.

Private Donovan distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Chipilly Ridge, France, 19 August 1918, in alone entering an enemy dugout and capturing five prisoners.
