War Department, General Orders No. 126 (1919)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Walter P. Donoghue (ASN: 1708284), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Moulin-de-Charlevaux, in the Argonne Forest, France, 6 October 1918. Sergeant Donoghue was sent out on a patrol to investigate machine-gun fire from the left flank and to the rear of his company’s position, and was wounded in the left leg by shrapnel fragments. Upon reporting back to his company commander he refused to be evacuated, but insisted in taking an active and gallant part in four subsequent attacks made to reach a battalion of our troops who were cut off and surrounded by a superior force of the enemy.
