By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Frank C. Donahoe (ASN: 553510), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. Private Donahoe distinguished himself while serving with Company A, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 4 October 19189, during the assault of the 3d Division on Woods 250 southwest of Cunel. Company A was in support of Company C, both companies being members of the assaulting battalion. Touch having been temporarily lost with Company C in the darkness, and all runners having been put out of action, a volunteer was called for to go forward and establish liaison with Company C. Despite a very heavy counter barrage and severe fire from concealed machine guns, Private Donahoe volunteered. Severely wounded soon after starting out, he, nevertheless, pushed forward and successfully accomplished his mission. In so doing he materially assisted the whole battalion to continue the advance and gave a splendid example of devotion to duty and self-sacrifice. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
