The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private William B. Dollard (ASN: 1596), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 1st Engineers (Attached), 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Soissons, France, 22 July 1918. When he learned that a colonel lay wounded in an exposed position in front of the lines, Private Dollard asked and obtained permission of his company commander to go to the officer’s assistance. While attempting to perform this courageous duty he was killed by machine-gun fire.
