The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class John A. Doll (ASN: 2965378), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Olsene, Belgium, 31 October 1918. While leading a squad forward, Private Doll suddenly found himself in the midst of an enemy barrage, but he exposed himself to the severe fire, in trying to keep his men organized and continue with the advance. He was killed while thus engaged.
