    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant John R. Dixon (ASN: 1258639), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, west of Varennes, France, 27 September 1918. While advancing in the attack against a strongly held enemy position, Sergeant Dixon’s platoon was suddenly fired on by several machine guns. The platoon commander was killed and the platoon forced to withdraw. Hearing the cries of a wounded comrade, he advanced through heavy machine-gun fire over 100 yards toward the enemy lines and returned with a severely wounded comrade.
