The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Duncan J. Devane (ASN: 1323052), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 115th Machine-Gun Battalion, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ypres, Belgium, 23 August 1918. Upon learning that several members of his platoon had been wounded by enemy shell fire, Sergeant Devane immediately left his dug-out and went to their assistance. After carrying one man to shelter and being knocked down by a bursting shell in so doing, he returned to the shelled area and helped carry the rest of the wounded men to the dressing station 500 yards away, across a field which was being heavily bombarded with gas and high explosive shells.
