The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Frank Deskins (ASN: 542198), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 354th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Remonville, France, 1 November 1918. Corporal Deskins took command of the four leading combat groups, after four other leaders had been disabled, directing them with such skill and coolness that many machine guns were taken from the enemy. Four hours before the day’s objective had been reached his shoulder was pierced by a machine-gun bullet, but he told no one of the wound until his line had been organized along the objective.
