The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant John Henry Dennelley (ASN: 89034), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Landres-et-St. Georges, France, 15 October 1918. When his company had been ordered to withdraw under intense machine-gun and artillery fire, Sergeant Dennelley, remained in the position until the other men had safely retired, when he saw to the removal of six wounded men.
