The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Hubert A. Deasey (ASN: 2061894), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chipilly Ridge, France, 9 August 1918. Acting on his own initiative Private Deasey advanced alone against a machine-gun nest that had been causing heavy casualties among his comrades. He crawled to within a short distance of the enemy position before he was detected. He then rushed the post and bayoneted the three gunners, being himself killed in the encounter.
