The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Vinton Adams Dearing, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cantigny, France, 28 May 1918. Detailed in command of a carrying party, Second Lieutenant Dearing bravely proceeded under fire to execute his mission, and by his example of bravery heartened his men, who were under fire for the first time. On 29 May 1918, he took his party through heavy shelling to carry ammunition to the front lines without being ordered to do so.
