The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Harold A. Dawson (ASN: 180798), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Sanitary Detachment, 126th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Juvigny, France, 31 August 1918. Sergeant Dawson volunteered to go out into a field swept by artillery and machine-gun fire to administer first aid to wounded soldiers, constantly exposing himself to fire. His work saved the lives of many soldiers. After dark, when it was possible to remove the wounded from the field, he worked tirelessly during their evacuation to the first-aid station.
