The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Major (Infantry) Murray Davis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 140th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Exermont, France, September 26 – 29, 1918. Major Davis led his battalion brilliantly, and, when wounded, refused to go to the rear, but having his wound dressed on the spot continued in command of his battalion. Later he was killed while leading his command in an advance.
