The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) Howard Hubber Davis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 12th Sherwood Foresters, British Expeditionary Forces (Attached), in Templeux Quarries, France, 8 January 1918. Lieutenant Davis entered a dugout which had been caved in by enemy shell fire and ministered to the wounded. Although the dugout was under heavy shellfire, he performed an operation for amputation of a leg and thereby saved a soldier’s life.
