    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Fred C. Davis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 108th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ronssoy, France, September 29 – 30, 1918. Lieutenant Davis successfully held a trench several hundred yards in advance of the Hindenburg line, under heavy shell and machine-gun fire, with a detachment which he had organized with men from different organizations. The following morning he led his detachment still farther, cleaning up about 500 yards of enemy trenches.
