The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Alex Davidson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Madeleine Farm, France, 16 October 1918. While leading his platoon in an attack Lieutenant Davidson was struck down by enemy fire. He got up and started forward, urging his men on, until he was hit a second time. He refused medical attention, and, although mortally wounded, he motioned to his men to continue the attack.
